Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) or Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) programs monitor the action of an aircraft during flight. This is typically achieved with data acquisition and storage hardware and post flight data analysis software. The data generated from FDM/FOQA is generally used to improve operational efficiency and safety and reduce maintenance costs. FDM/FOQA is voluntary in the US, but mandatory on airlines operated under European EASA jurisdiction whose mass is greater than 20 tons. Similar programs exist for rotor craft, such as Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring (HFDM). Curtiss-Wright has a number of products, including the DAFR and Acra KAM-500, that can be used to meet these application requirements.

For this and several other airborne data recording applications, Curtiss-Wright manufactures rugged, compact recorders. We make airborne recording chassis that can be mounted in cockpits and avionics bays, and hard-mounted in any orientation on an airframe. Our recorder range includes cockpit voice recorders, crash-protected recorders, dedicated data recorders and data acquisition recorders that meet or exceed the requirements of FAA, EUROCAE and EASA. Our recorder range features designs with configurable interface support for sensors, avionics busses, time and position, built-in test and solid-state recording.

Curtiss-Wright also offers recorders for Usage Monitoring (UM) which monitor usage of military fast jets to calculate the remaining Fatigue Index (FI) of an airframe using a variety of recorded data, such as three axis of g-levels and engine thermal cycling.
