On January 7, 2019, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) issued a memo mandating the use of the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA). The memo states that “MOSA supporting standards should be included in all requirements, programming and development activities for future weapon system modifications and new start development programs to the maximum extent possible.” This mandate for MOSA was even codified into a United States law (Title 10 U.S.C. 2446a.(b), Sec 805) that states all major defense acquisition programs (MDAP) are to be designed and developed using a MOSA.

According to the DoD, the use of MOSA solutions will “support a more rapid evolution of capabilities and technologies throughout the product life cycle through the use of architecture modularity, open systems standards, and appropriate business practices.”

Curtiss-Wright has been at the forefront of delivering modular open system architecture to the defense and aerospace markets for decades, supporting many widely used MOSA-related open systems standards:

  • Module, backplane and chassis standards defined by the VITA trade association (including OpenVPX)
  • C5ISR (formerly C4ISR) Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS)
  • The Open Group Sensor Open Systems Architecture™ (SOSA)

Curtiss-Wright’s Modular Open Systems Approach

Curtiss-Wright is a leading member and participant in all of the organizations and consortiums actively defining and improving these important system hardware standards. Click here to see our innovations aligned with the SOSA™ Technical Standard and CMOSS.

We design rugged modules and systems in alignment with these key standards to deliver the following benefits for which DoD has mandated MOSA:

  • Significant cost saving or avoidance
  • Schedule reduction and rapidly deploy new technology
  • Opportunities for technical upgrades and refresh
  • Interoperability, including system of systems interoperability and mission integration
  • Other benefits during the sustainment phase of a major system

Through the use of MOSA components, Curtiss-Wright products shorten the path to field new technology to defeat emerging threats.
