Module and System Solutions Aligned with CMOSS and the SOSA™ Technical Standard
Curtiss-Wright is committed to delivering the industry’s most extensive family of OpenVPX modules and system solutions that are compliant with the U.S. Army CCDC C5ISR Center’s C5ISR/EW Modular Open Suite of Standards (CMOSS) standards and developed in alignment with standards currently being defined by The Open Group Sensor Open Systems Architecture™ (SOSA) Consortium.
These open architecture industry standards enable the reduction of system size, weight, and power (SWaP) in deployed C5ISR (formerly C4ISR) systems and ensure commonality across multiple platforms by enabling the sharing of hardware and software components.
The widespread adoption of CMOSS by system integrators in the US, as well as “Five Eyes” and other NATO nations, will help move the implementation of C5ISR/C4ISR capabilities away from the use of costly and complex “stovepiped” separate boxes on platforms. The use of true open standards will make it easier and more cost-effective to upgrade capabilities and keep pace with commercial technology by eliminating complex integration challenges, increasing competition, and replacing proprietary interfaces with open standards. CMOSS will help drive momentum in the embedded industry away from costly, complex proprietary solutions and towards COTS-based open architectures.
Standards leveraged by CMOSS include the Vehicle Integration for C4ISR/EW Interoperability (VICTORY) for network interoperability, the OpenVPX standard for combining cards in a common chassis, Modular Open RF Architecture (MORA) standard for sharing RF resources within a modular design, and the Future Airborne Capability Environment™ (FACE) standard for software portability.
About the SOSA Consortium
The SOSA Consortium creates a common framework for transitioning sensor systems to an open systems architecture. The Consortium’s goal is to “allow flexibility in the selection and acquisition of sensors and subsystems that provide sensor data collection, processing, exploitation, communication, and related functions over the full life cycle of the C4ISR system.” The SOSA standards initiative leverages a number of VITA standards, including VITA 65, the OpenVPX standard that ensures interoperability among the COTS solutions that are used to create subsystems and systems.
Curtiss-Wright’s Contributions to CMOSS and the SOSA Technical Standard
Curtiss-Wright is an active contributor to the definition and advancement of the open standards included in CMOSS and those being defined by the SOSA Consortium. We have been a leading participant in the development of CMOSS and SOSA standards since the inception of both initiatives. Curtiss-Wright is a key participant in several SOSA Consortium working groups, including a chair position. In addition, the company has been a leading contributor to the VITA Standards Organization (VSO) that oversees the definition of the OpenVPX, PMC, XMC, and FMC form factor standards that provide the hardware foundation of both CMOSS and SOSA. This makes Curtiss-Wright ideally positioned to work with customers and help guide the development and success of their applications aligned with CMOSS and the SOSA Technical Standard.
The Curtiss-Wright MOSA Task Force
In support of the US DoD Tri-Services mandate to use the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) “in all requirements, programming and development activities for future weapon system modifications and new start development programs to the maximum extent possible,” Curtiss-Wright has established a cross-functional MOSA Task Force to streamline the development and availability of these new interoperable solutions.
The MOSA Task Force will bring to bear the Company’s industry leading expertise in system architecture, packaging, rugged OpenVPX module building block design, and advanced data storage solutions to address emerging customer requirements for cost-effective, high-TRL MOSA products.
Curtiss-Wright hardware developed to be CMOSS compliant and aligned with the SOSA Technical Standard includes a broad complement of open architecture solutions, including high-performance single board computers (SBCs), Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), GPGPUs, A-PNT timing and network switch cards. Additionally, Curtiss-Wright provides CMOSS-compliant lab development chassis and rugged deployable multi-slot chassis.
